Joining Our School (Transition)

At Tilstock Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child feels happy, confident, and ready to learn from the very beginning of their journey with us. Our transition process is carefully designed to provide a warm welcome while helping us understand each child’s individual needs.

When children first join our school, they are welcomed into a supportive and nurturing environment where they can begin to settle in and build positive relationships with staff and peers. Early on, we carry out a gentle baseline assessment in reading, writing, mathematics, and phonics. This helps us gain a clear understanding of each child’s current abilities and informs how we can best support their learning.

Throughout the six-week transition period, we meet with each child on a weekly basis to monitor their progress, celebrate achievements, and address any emerging needs. These regular check-ins allow us to adapt our approach and ensure that every child is making steady progress and feeling secure in their new environment.

At the end of the transition period, we invite families to meet with us to discuss their child’s progress in detail. This meeting provides an opportunity to share successes, highlight any areas where additional support may be beneficial, and work collaboratively to ensure the best possible outcomes for the child. Where appropriate, we will create a tailored action plan to provide targeted support and help each child thrive.

Our goal is to make every transition into Tilstock Primary School a positive and successful experience, laying strong foundations for future learning and development.
